Orff is a way of learning music by speaking and doing. For example, Kindergarten students learn a rhythm rhyme, 'Big brown lion roaring at the zoo! Little brown mouse, hiding in a shoe.' They identify that a lion can sound very loud (forte) and a mouse can sound very soft (piano). Each child then practices the rhyme vocally along with their hands, changing the volume from forte to piano. Finally, each child selects an instrument to play during the recitation. You can imagine they enjoy the contrast that occurs with all the instruments between the Forte Lion and the Piano Mouse!
